Bidet Toilet suites must be correctly installed
Bidet toilets are becoming a common item in the Australian bathroom scene, although many installations we come across are highly illegal.
Many customers are not aware that they have been incorrectly installed and are also unaware of the dangers involved when this is the situation.
Are bidet sprayers (handheld bidet hoses), bidet seats and similar fixtures allowed in NSW?
The answer is Yes, if they are WELS rated and are approved with the Australian Standards but there are legal requirements.
Because they connect directly to your potable (drinking) water supply, the plumbing code classes them as a high potential cross-connection risk.
Why are they classed as high potential risk?
Due to the design and nature of use of the devices they can be polluted with contaminates or siphon back into the drinking water which can cause serious health consequences.
The bidet must have its own back flow prevention device attached to the device, but it will also require a Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD) located at the water meter connection. This valve needs to be tested annually by a licenced plumber, the report is sent through to Sydney Water.

Bidet seats with an integrated outlet of 25mm and above the toilet bowl overflow may not need extra backflow devices if they have the appropriate WaterMark certified integrated protection. Alternatively, if the bidet toilet seat has either a 25mm air gap or integral atmosphere vacuum breaker. The seat option is sometimes the most feasible option as it avoids the costly expense of installing and annual testing of the required back flow preventer at the water meter.
